How to properly prune your young fruit tree during the first year of training?

Updated: Oct 21, 2023

Use your 3-legged orchard ladder designed for pruning and picking your fruit trees. You must select 3 main branches on your new tree. After its first growing season, as each of these three branches has regrown, cut them back to one third of their length.

When selecting the bud, think about the direction the branch will grow from it, it should be outward facing.

After this pruning you can leave at least two new shoots for each branch.

The young fruit tree will end up with 6 new branches the following winter and these will be reduced to half their length.
